We also decided if research was to be done this would be a great opportunity to educate students in Aberdeen and Guyana about the importance of research, and about opportunities outside the lab, so we got Will Paine involved who is a bit of a whiz with cameras and who agreed to make a documentary about the trip. We also realised we would really like to know the attitudes and ideas that the Guyanese have about Western lifestyle. Scotland has one of the highest incidences of diet and lifestyle related disease in the world, partly due to access to food but partly due to food choices so we became curious about what these would be like in Guyana in comparison. This has sparked the idea of an education sub-project (more details to follow) centred around using our research to educate the next generation about how different cultures view the 'Western diet' and help them to make food choices in the future that will be best for their health...
